Dammam, KSA, 2013 Dammam University has taken the next step in furthering its quest to provide cutting-edge services and solutions for its library patrons students, faculty, staff and researchers by partnering with Naseej the Arab world’s leader in providing Library Management Solutions and RFID (radio frequency identification) Technologies for Libraries to install a new library items security and management system. Hundreds of universities and research centers across the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Arab world now use the Naseej-installed system, which is based on the world’s leading 3M RFID technology.
The newlibrary security system combines several functions, including RFID gates that read and detect RFID tags, and sound an alert to notify staff if a patron attempts to leave with an item that has not been checked out. The system meets ADA requirements and has a variety of flexible mounting options. Eighteen security gates have been installed at Dammam University.
The self-service system also features four self-check devices, along with an easy-to-use touch screen and step-by-step instructions. Thus, library patrons can self-checkout materials simply by placing them on a large work surface. The system then reads the item information stored on the attached RFID tags, checks them out, and prints or emails a receipt all within about five seconds.
Another component of the 3M RFID system is the Digital Library Assistant, a cordless, compact and easy-to-use device whose ergonomic design and swivel antenna maximize comfort and minimize stooping. By simultaneously performing shelf-reading, searching and inventory scan, it saves time, increases productivity, and discovers errors that might otherwise go unnoticed. The device can also quickly identify items that were not properly checked out and detect the security status of materials.
Most importantly, the cutting-edge 3M Intelligent Return and Sorter System enables library patrons to return their borrowed items at any time. Under the new environment, patrons are able to check-in library items automatically through an external induction with a touch screen.
The system reads the RFID tags attached to the items, displays the item information, check-in time and date, then prints a receipt whereby items are removed from the patron’s record. In the meantime, the system linked to the Integrated Library System electronically sorts the returned items for shelving.
Naseej has supplied all the project’s logistics, making it the second system of its kind in KSA, after that installed by Naseej at King Faisal University.
Naseej VP Eng. Abdullah Al Turaifi commented on the futuristic capacity of the system as follows: “Naseej has built an extensive system for future expansion projects, including electromagnetic and barcode identification options. The new system saves time and effort for patrons and librarians. Patrons can return their borrowed items any time by simply depositing them through the external induction.”
